SOWING JUSTICE – Reclaiming Indigenous Seed Sovereignty

Sowing Justice is an initiative focused on preserving indigenous seeds and traditional agricultural knowledge across East and Southern Africa. Indigenous seeds are vital for biodiversity, food security, and climate resilience, yet they are increasingly threatened by industrial agriculture, hybrid seeds, and corporate-controlled seed systems.

Through this project, we engage youth and young feminist advocates to amplify the importance of seed sovereignty via storytelling, advocacy, and policy engagement. By mobilizing communities, documenting traditional seed preservation practices, and connecting with regional and global campaigns, the initiative strengthens the voice of smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, in decisions affecting agriculture and food systems.

Key Objectives:

  • Promote seed sovereignty through youth-led campaigns and public engagement
  • Preserve and document indigenous seed knowledge for integration into regional and global discussions on food security and climate action

Expected Outputs and Outcomes:

  • Multimedia storytelling pieces highlighting indigenous seed preservation
  • A comprehensive report on traditional seed practices
  • Increased awareness among policymakers and the public about the importance of indigenous seeds
  • Enhanced capacity of smallholder farmers, especially women and youth, to safeguard seed diversity and strengthen food security

By reclaiming control over seed systems, Sowing Justice supports resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems that prioritize community-led solutions and climate-smart agriculture.
